【週末英語#187】英語で「なんだかんだ忙しい」はなんと言う？

いつの間にやら11月も後半で。

年の瀬がせまってくると特に何がというわけでもないのに、忙しいというか慌ただしいですね。

具体的に何がというわけでもないけど「なんだかんだ忙しい」という時は英語でなんていうんでしょうね。

• this and that：あれやこれや
• something or other：なんやかんや
• one thing or another：なんだかんだ
• in one way or another：あれこれと
• 英語で「なんだかんだ忙しい」

this and that：あれやこれや

わりと最初に習う単語で説明できちゃう「あれこれ」。

• this and that

これで「あれこれ、いろんなこと」という意味で使えちゃうんです。

英英辞典の説明にも「various things」とありました。

なんと便利なフレーズ。

• This and that.
  （いろいろとね。：何か聞かれたときに大雑把な説明で使える）
• She tried this and that.
  （彼女はあれこれ試してみた。）
• We have to do this and that.
  （私達はあれこれやらなくちゃいけない。）
• We sat speaking this and that.
  （私たちは座ってあれこれ話をした。）
• They are talking about this and that.
  （彼らはあれこれと話をしています。）
• I’m busy with this and that.
  （あれやこれやで忙しい。）

something or other：なんやかんや

「something or other」も「なんだかんだ、何やかや」という意味で使えます。

英英辞典の説明には

something whose exact nature you do not know or have forgotten

とあったので、正確なとこがわからないもしくは忘れた何かという意味で使うようです。

• He is doing something or other.
  （彼は何やらやっている。）
• She is always complaining about something or other.
  （彼女はいつも何かしら不平ばかり言っている。）
• I am busy with something or other.
  （なんやかんや忙しい。）

one thing or another：なんだかんだ

「one thing or another」も「なんだかんだ、あれやこれや」といった意味。

「one thing and another」も同じ意味のようです。

この場合は「or」でも「and」でもどちらでもいいのかな。

英英辞典では「what with one thing and another」の説明は

used to explain that you have had a lot of work, problems, or jobs that you had to do

とありました。

色々といっぱいやることがあるということを説明するときに使うということですね。

• We talked of one thing and another.
  （いろいろと雑談した。）
• He complains about one thing or another all the time.
  （彼はいつも何やかやと不平を言っている。）
• I am busy with one thing or another.
  （何だかんだ忙しい。）

• I was busy with one thing or another and I ended up missing lunch.
  （バタバタ続きでランチを食べ損なった。）

in one way or another：あれこれと

似たような言葉で「in one way or another」が出てきたのですが、これは「あれこれと、どうにかして、なんとかして」という意味で使われる。

「way」が使われてるから、1つかあるいは別の方法でというニュアンスになるので、様々な方法でなんとかしてという感じなんですね。

これも「or」のかわりに「and」が使われることもある。

• I will finish this, one way or another !
  （なんとかしてこれを終わらせる。）
• You have to finish it today one way or another.
  （なんとしてでも今日中に終わらせてくれ。）

英語で「なんだかんだ忙しい」

まとめると英語でなんだかんだ忙しいという時は、

• I’m busy with this and that.
• I am busy with something or other.
• I am busy with one thing or another.

ですね。

ここ最近ずっとというニュアンスを含めるなら、

• I’ve been busy with this and that everyday.
• I’ve been busy with something or other.
• Everyday, I have been busy with one thing or another.

となりますね。

ちなみに「細々とした仕事を多くこなす」という意味で「do lots of little jobs」という表現もあります。
