ドラマや映画なんかでもよく使われる「in the first place」は、
- そもそも
- 第一に
といった意味で使われる熟語。
日常会話でもけっこう使える表現なので丸っとフレーズごと覚えておこう。
in the first place：そもそも
「in the first place」は、何か起こった出来事や物事の発端とか、原因を取り上げて、改めて何かを言いたい時に使われます。
日本語だと「そもそもさぁ……」みたいな、ちょっとした苛立ちも含むようなニュアンスでしょうか。
英英辞典の説明では、
used at the end of the sentence to talk about why something was done or whether it should have been done or not
文末で使われて、なんでそれをしたのか、それをするべきだったのかについて話すときに使われる。
もう過ぎてしまったことに対して「なんであのとき……」的な感じですね。
ここで使われている「place」は場所ではなくて、順番とか順位のような順序という感じ。
文末で使われることが多いけれども、文中や文等で使われる事もあります。
「そもそも（in the first place）」の例文
- Why didn’t you say that in the first place?
（そもそもなぜ最初にそれを言ってくれなかったの？） - Why didn’t you tell me in the first place?
（なんで先にそれ言わなかったんだよ?） - Why didn’t you do that in the first place?

けっこう日常会話で使える表現パターンが多いですね。
in the first place：第一に、まず
「in the first place」には、
- 第一に
- はじめに
という順序を表す意味で使われる事もあります。
理由とか論点などを列挙するときに使われるので文頭で使われることが多い。
- In the first place, you should be punctual.
（まず第一に、君は時間を守らなければならない。） - In the first place, this is not correct.
（まずそもそもこの点が間違っている。） - In the first place, I’m very busy today. In the second place, I don’t want to go anyway.
（まず第一に今日はとても忙しい。第二に、そもそも行きたくない。）
